WHITE SEABASS CAUGHT AT ROCA BALLENA WITH CAPT. JUANCHYS AGUILAR
Dec. 24, 2006, Derek Arneson, La Bocana, Baja Pacific Coast, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
I spent the week in La Bocana with my wife Karla Arneson. This was her first Baja fishing trip. We fished three days with Juanchys Aguilar.
The first day we fished at Roca Ballena off the Baja coast and my wife caught her first Yellowtail. This first day we caught a dozen or so small yellowtail but that was fine for my wife's first time. We went in early because of heavy winds.
The second fishing day we caught 7 big yellowtail up to 40 pounds. We were fishing in 150 feet of water and I had my best luck with a heavy blue and chrome iron.
We also had all the Calico Bass and Sandbass we wanted plus a couple of nice Sheephead. I also caught a 10 pound Amberjack this day.
On fishing day three, we went to the same area but only caught a dozen or so medium Yellowtail but then the fish of the trip came.
I boated a 44 pound White Sea Bass on a 4 ounce Megabait. According to Juanchys this is the first rod and reel white seabass he has caught on his panga.
Anyway this was a great Baja fishing vacation, and I'm already looking forward to my next trip. Baja coastal weather was very cold in the mornings and the wind was up by 10 a.m. every morning. The water temperature was 70-75 degrees.
We fished Dec. 17-19-20. We caught about 12 yellowtail the first day and 4 Calico Bass; 7 big Yellowtail, 3 medium Yellowtail, 2 Sheephead, 20 Sandbass and 1 Amberjack the second day; and 10 Yellowtail, 1 White Seabass, and 20 Sandbass the third day.
