SEVEN YELLOWTAIL LANDED ON 17 HITS WHILE FISHING AT
BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES' ISLA HORSEHEAD WITH CAPT. IGOR GALVAN
June 12, 2004, Robert Johnson, Bahia de los Angeles fishing report, Baja California, Mexico:
I just got back from Bahia de los Angeles. Took a day ride on June 8 with Igor Galvan, deck hand Jose (Rabbit) with my niece Megan Johnson is from Abita Springs, Louisiana, who just graduated Tulane University.
We got 7 yellowtail to 20 pounds on fly line and broke off about 10 more at the mound east of Horsehead. Not real big but they had Megan railed.
Later we got about 7 leopard grouper by slow troll off Punta el Pescador and Punta el Alacran. Got to beach a few times for potty breaks, so Igor showed us how to rake up the clams by hand. (Afterwards he pointed out the sting rays!).
L.A. Bay water temperature was 68 degrees. Air was 80. Light wind in the early morning. A very pleasant trip and I think we have a new Baja convert.
On our trip, we spent the first night in Guerrero Negro, and 2 nights at the La Pinta in Loreto.
After Loreto we went to Santa Rosalia to pay my speeding ticket that I got near Guerrero Negro, "You’re speeding is too fast, Senor." He should have just put the mordida on me since the ticket was 228 pesos because I had a seat belt on and paid it within 15 days. Had to though since the federale kept my drivers license for guarantee.
Stayed in Mulege one night at the Brisa del Mar, down the river dirt road from town. Stayed one night at Hamaca in BOLA with Jose and his wife. We drove home after fishing Tuesday.
The bait was little mackerel that we made just outside the Punta Arena lighthouse. It took about an hour to make, which is long, and Igor didn't seem happy with the count. But, we pretty much used it all day.
