DORADO AND YELLOWTAIL FISHING IS GOOD
FOR BOATS AT BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES
Aug. 21, 2004, Abraham Vazquez, Camp Gecko, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico fishing report:
L.A. Bay fishing has been good for dorado and good for yellowtail. First the yellows, there is lots of yellowtail behind horse head island they are small and bite on the yo-yo , and also there is lots of bonito with them , and of course barracuda. There is bigger yellows behind Smith island and also at Guadalupe reef on live bait on the loop. The sea lions have been a problem on the Bahia de los Angeles reefs taking away the fish from the lines.
The dorado have been interesting to say the least. One day you hit Sargasso with dozens of dorado under and easy to make limits and the next day you can't find a feather afloat.
L.A. Bay fishing water has turned colors also from blue to green, and it is a lot of work to look for the good water some days. They are not hitting the feathers. We are getting them on the fly line with live bait. Most of them in the 10-20 pound range with some bigger ones 30-50 pounds some days. The best fishing for dorado is still far outside of Barnabe reef and on the east side of partida. Some sailfish there also, but I have been doing fine only 8 miles away from the camp outside of horse head and pescador.
Bait is not as hard to make as it was a couple of week ago but it is still not very easy. Bahia de los Angeles weather has been great. It is hot during the day in the upper 90's but at night we have been getting a west wind from the pacific and it has made it cold and dry at night (mid 70's) , like get the blanket weather , so humidity has been low , this is very unusual for this time of the year , this change does not happen till mid September , but I am not complaining it is great. 3 days ago had a free day so took my kids fishing and had a nice dorado for dinner.
