BAJA CHARTER BUS FISHING GROUP DOES WELL
ON DIAZ PANGAS AT BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES
Oct. 23, 2004, Steve Barstow, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico Bus Fishing Trip Report:
Returned from our bus trip to Bahia de los Angeles on Monday. Had a great trip! We fished on pangas from Sammy & Alfredo Diaz (011-52-200-124-9101/02). The skippers put us right on top of the fish with a minimal boat ride!
Caught limits or near-limits daily of Cabrilla. Lots of Yellowtail in the 6-10 lb range, a few dorado, misc bass, shark, bonitas, barracuda, triggerfish and a Broomtail Grouper.
Had 5 Bahia de los Angeles fishing boats out Friday, 6 on Saturday and only 2 on Sunday. Bahia de los Angeles weather was beautiful Saturday and Sunday, in the mid-90's, but a nasty north wind came up over Saturday night and was still blowing hard Sunday morning. The road from Baja 1 to Bahia de los Angeles has been completely rebuilt and is excellent condition. Am considering another bus group trip to the Bay in March.
From the border it was approx 10 hrs to Bahia de los Angeles by our charter bus, including a stop for lunch at Jardines Baja in San Quintin. The bus we take is a big 'greyhound' type bus with seats for approx 50 pax with lots of cargo space. Everybody brought large ice chests, I brought a small freezer, and there was still room. 3 or 4 of the guys brought scuba gear too! We filled the freezer at the motel (Costa del Sol. I highly recommend it, 011-52-200-124-9110, costadelsolhotel@hotmail.com). Then we started putting fish in the freezer at Casa Diaz. Had no problem with bringing it home. We came home through Tecate rather than TJ/San Ysidro as the drill at TJ is too much of a hassle.
Bahia de los Angeles water temps were in the 80's and we fished south toward Las Animas for the most productive areas. We made bait on the way out (200 yds off the launch ramp) and that was what most of the yellows were caught on, in about 150-200 ft depth. I caught a couple y'tails casting crocodiles with a fast retrieve but I think most of them were caught deep with live bait.
Squid-tipped Iron in blue/white, or chrome/blue worked well on the cabrillas and other misc species. All in all, it seemed that almost anything presented worked. Didn't try any trolling, though, so I don't know if feathers or Rapalas might have worked, as we were doing so well otherwise.
