THE GECKO III BOAT IS LOST AS STRONG NORTH WINDS KEEP L.A. BAY
BOATS FISHING LOCALLY AT ISLA SMITH AND ISLA HORSEHEAD
Nov. 5, 2004, Abraham Vazquez, Camp Gecko, Bahia de los Angeles sportfishing, Baja California, Mexico:
Bahia de los Angeles weather has been bad. There are medium to small yellowtail on the deep reefs, caught yo-yoing iron, and also in the Smith Island area and behind Horsehead. But for the last 10 days, Bahia de los Angeles had only two days of weather that allowed fishing. All the other days there was north wind, and very strong at times.
Bahia de los Angeles air temperatures are hitting the mid-70s and dropping to 63 degrees at night.
On Monday the north wind blew very strong, in the 30 m.p.h. range with gusts of over 50 for more than 48 hours.
The Gecko III broke anchor and stranded itself on the rocky shore. By the time I could take it out, it had already sustained irreparable damage to the hull. Like my friend Thomas says, the termites let go (he claims that the only thing keeping the boat together was termites holding hands).
So it is time to look for a new hull, and with a little luck the Gecko IV will be coming soon to Bahia de los Angeles.
The water temperature is cooling fast. It is 69-71 degrees all over the place. There are lots of whalesharks in the bay now. Fuel is 150 pesos for 5 gallons. The Bahia de los Angeles gas station is taking shape but no word on when it will open. But just in case the governor came last week and did a symbolic inauguration of it.
