GOOD FISHING TRIP TO GUILLERMO'S AT BAHIA
DE LOS ANGELES PRODUCES 30 YELLOWTAIL
Nov. 29, 2004, Jeff Riolo, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico Fishing Trip:
A fish report from this past week at Bahia de los Angeles. The experience was so nice fishing and staying with Guillermo and his family it would be nice to acknowledge their nice facility and great customer service.
Guillermo and I fished both days in Bahia de los Angeles off the northwest side of Isla Angel de la Guarda and also on the Baja peninsula side west of the island at Punta Remedios.
For the two days of Bahia de los Angeles fishing we caught 30 yellowtail ranging from 10 to 15 pounds. A white sea bass was 25 pounds. The fish was caught on live bait on the bottom in about 175 feet of water off one of the north reefs.
I was using 25 pound test for the irons, mostly blue and white in color, and 30 pound test for live bait, Pacific mackerel, about 6 inches in length with 8 to 16-ounce sinkers, since the tidal flow was strong due to the full moon.
Since late August this was my seventh white seabass over eight days of fishing. The other six white seabass were caught with Jamie Garcia out of San Quintin. It has been a good year for white seabass, one of my favorite fish to catch and eat.
Fishing two days this past week with Guillermo at Bahia de los Angeles was a great experience. The weather cooperated, with very little wind and sunny skies both days. The first day it was just Guillermo and I fishing on his new "super panga" the Angel de los Guarda which is the nicest and safest panga I have ever seen. It has all the electronics including fish finder, GPS, CB radio, and satellite stereo as well as live bait well and tee top for shade. The 6 cylinder inboard motor got us up to cruising speeds of 20 knots so reaching the big island and further reefs was not a problem.
The Bahia de los Angeles fishing water temperatures were 64-65 degrees so we had to work at finding fish but being the great captain he is Guillermo found fish in good numbers both days.
That first day we did land many very nice yellowtail in the 15-pound range fishing in anywhere from 70 to 200 feet of water. The second day, we were joined by three experienced fishermen from Whittier and the four of us boarded a couple of dozen nice yellowtail and one white seabass around 25 pounds. The fish were caught both with live bait and yo-yoing iron.
Staying at Guillermo's for the three nights was also part of a great trip; good people, nice food, and clean rooms. Guillermo's son, Captain Igor also took his new Bahia de los Angeles super panga out both days with a young family from Chula Vista. It was their first experience at salt water fishing so although they stayed not too far from the harbor, Igor put them on small yellowtail both days and the young son is now a fishermen for life. Bahia de los Angeles is a beautiful place.
