BAJA TRAILER BOAT FISHING TRIP TO GUILLERMO'S AT
BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES PRODUCES 50 YELLOWTAIL CAUGHT

June 20, 2005, Jeff Williams, Bahia de los Angeles fishing trip report, Baja California, Mexico:

We left Costa Mesa on Saturday, June 11, at 0400. Arrived at Guillermo's at Bahia de los Angeles at 1600. We had a margarita and tacos while the trailer hubs cooled, loaded rods on the boat, Peregrine, and launched at 1700. We were set up on our mooring rig and in camp at Camp Gecko having a Pacifico by 1800. Sleep came pretty easily from there.

On Sunday, June 12, we fished Bahia de los Angeles Cabeza de Caballo, Piojo, and Coronada. All fishing stops resulted in Yellowtail from 8-12 pounds, along with an assortment of triggerfish, barracuda, cabrilla, and the other usual suspects.

On Monday and Wednesday, we ran down to Barnabe Reef. Both days were great fun. The Yellowtail were a bit larger grade and the ones we never saw kept the adrenalin flowing. Most of the time we drifted across the reef with the current at 1.5-1.6 knots. A couple times, we fished roughly stationary, holding the boat in position by bumping it in and out of gear. Always ready to run forward off of the reef when hooked up. A number of these attempts resulted in being broken off on 100-pound test.

Tuesday saw us fishing at Isla Partida. Here we saw the most life of the trip and caught the best grade of fish. Our educated guesses placed these fish in the 20+ pound class. Again we hooked a number of fish that never saw color, let alone the hull.

On Thursday and Friday, we were back fishing at the Bahia de los Angeles inner islands for more wide open action on the smaller models.

After six days of fishing, we had landed 50 Yellowtail, 28 Grouper, countless Cabrilla, barracuda, and triggerfish. We killed three fish for the week, enjoying sashimi in the afternoon and some fine dinners.

Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay) fishing weather could not have been better. Calm to 10 knots of wind, high 80's during the day and low 70's at night. Water temperature was 70-72 early in the week, and 73-75 late in the week.

We left for home on Saturday, stopping for the night at Cielito Lindo in San Quintin on the Pacific side of Baja. The return time on the Baja road, via Tecate, was 13 hours and 40 minutes, including 27 minutes of border waiting and secondary. Another perfect week in paradise.
