FISHING FOR RED SNAPPERS IS GOOD FOR
ANGLERS AT BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES
July 3, 2005, Abraham Vazquez, Camp Gecko, Bahia de los Angeles fishing, Baja California, Mexico:
The fishing has continued good at Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay), but it has changed a bit. The weather has been wild this week. There was dry west wind with temperatures in the upper 90s for 3 days and then strong southeast wind with very high humidity. Now it is dry again, but not too hot.
The fishing water temperature is 75 to 77 degrees around Bahia de los Angeles. The water is still too green for any pelagics.
The yellowtail have been small, in the 4-8 pound range, with very few over 12 pounds and fewer even over 30 pounds. Most of the small ones have been in the area behind Horse Head Island and south of Piojo Island, where the sea lions have been eating 3 out of 5 yellows hooked.
There are a few yellowtail at Coronado, and there is still lots of squid. The bait seems to have disappeared for the last couple of days.
Bernabe reef is good and so is Animas Bay and its reefs, but the fish are small and there is a report of many sharks up to 8 feet taking the fish there. I have not seen them myself.
I have been concentrating more on catching red snapper and groupers this week since they are bigger than the yellows, but the south wind has made this hard also.
There was also a hatch of mosquitos that was very bad for 3 days, but now they seem to have left. The bees are still here.
The road to Bahia de los Angeles is great, and we have wonderful gasoline and diesel.
