PLENTY OF YELLOWFIN TUNA COMING IN AT 30 TO 40 POUNDS
FOR ALMOST ALL BOATS FISHING THIS WEEK
June 10, 2004, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape fishing report, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
The fishing is still HOT! The East Cape Striped Marlin bite held steady, the Dorado bite continued to pick up a bit, and the yellowfin tuna bite is just plain going off!
East Cape anglers reported over a grand in total fish caught for the fourth consecutive week and the all important fish-per numbers are pretty decent. Environment-wise, we saw East Cape air temps range from 70-95 so it's getting a bit toasty down here in southern Baja. Terrafin reports East Cape water temp as of the 10th ranged from 73-85. There is a cooler water front with a range of 73-77 which starts down south off the Gordo Banks and continues on a N-NE heading to about 25 miles off Los Frailes. Otherwise, the water temp from Punta Arena on up to Isla Cerralvo between 20-30 miles off, averaged 83-85. The outside temp averaged between 78-82. Bait-wise, we saw caballito early in the reporting week but they've tailed off. However, we've still got sardines and baliju.
Regarding billfish, the East Cape Striped Marlin bite is just real steady. The approximate catch rate of Striped Marlin this past week was about 18%. East Cape anglers are reporting success to the north off Punta Pescadero between 6 miles and the shark buoy stops, as well as in the vicinity of the 88. To the south, anglers had some fun Between La Ribera (10-13 miles), Las Tachuelas (35 miles), and Los Frailes (10-13 miles). Some numbers came in straight off Los barriles as well (25 miles). East Cape Stripers were biting on caballito, baliju, and various lures. Two Sailfish were landed out off Punta Pescadero at one of the shark buoy stops. Caballito did the trick there.
As mentioned, the East Cape Dorado bite continued on an upward trend with some real nice fish being landed. the approximate catch rate last week was about 20%. Anglers are reporting some fun to the north off Punta Pescadero (23 miles, and the shark buoys), as well as straight of Los Barriles (25-36 miles). To the south, anglers reported success off La Ribera (10-12 miles). Caballito, sardines, and hoochies worked wonders this past week.
East Cape Yellowfin fishing is just dandy! They're not just footballs either, we've got some pretty decent poundage coming in with some fish weighing 30-40 lbs. The approximate East Cape catch rate for Yellowfin was a whopping 95%! You gotta feel bad if you didn't catch a Tuna at East Cape this past week. Anglers are reporting some serious fun to the north off Punta Pescadero (15-20 and 40-46 miles), as well as to the south off La Ribera (40 miles), Punta Arena (2-5 and 25 miles), and El Rincon (33-40 miles). Straight off Los Barriles also yielded some nice numbers (40-46 miles). Caballito, sardines, cedar plugs and hoochies were the drugs of choice among the pelagic species known as Yellowfin Tuna.
Rounding out the East Cape report were 7 Wahoo landed off Los Barriles (20 miles), La Ribera (10-12 miles), and Punta Colorada (10 miles). Anglers reported success on Rapalas there. 7 Roosterfish were also reported inshore at Los Frailes and Cabo Pulmo. Sardines did the trick there.
