EAST CAPE KAYAK FISHING PRODUCES GOOD
DORADO ACTION ON LIVE SARDINA BAITS

June 26, 2004, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico Fishing:

Warm early summer weather, with mild mornings near 70 and warm days to the low 90's, with warmer than usual water temp 85 to 88 deg, and calm, clear conditions with some afternoon breezes. Great East Cape fishing. Dorado showing in numbers, with 315 taken this week. Lots of striped marlin as well as increasing numbers of blue marlin. The big tuna have moved outside, and the bite inside remains hot for roosterfish & pargo. There is lots of bait in the East Cape fishing area.

East Cape Dorado—lots schooling inside, averaging 10-15lbs, with big bulls to 60lbs outside; over 300 taken this week. Our kayak fishermen are slaying dorado, with most fish taken on live sardina baits.

East Cape fishing for Yellowfin tuna—big schools, further outside this week, from 3-40 miles out, with fish to 142lbs taking hoochies, cedar plugs and live bait. Less pressure, with most anglers targeting dorado and billfish.

Billfish—The East Cape striped marlin bite remains close in this week, with lots of jumpers and tailers 3-12 miles offshore. Bigger blues this week to 450lbs, with sailfish moving in also. Most anglers targeting marlin are hooking up.

Inside—big roosterfish to 80lbs directly in front of Leonero and La Ribera, biting aggressively, and pargo very active off most area beaches, with over 100 taken this week.

Fish Count—100 yellowfin tuna, 315 dorado, 27 roosterfish, 47 striped marlin released, 9 sailfish, 111 pargo, and 11 blue marlin.

Fisherman of the Week—Dale Bruce, while fishing 3 days on a cruiser, released his first blue marlin, estimated at 300lbs, and took 10 dorado to 40lbs, and 10 tuna to 30lbs.
