FISHING ON CRUISERS AND A BAJA TIN BOAT
OUT OF MARTIN VERDUGO'S BEACH RESORT
July 4, 2004, Frank Price, Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Just got back from Verdugos. We fished Cruisers for 2 days. Monday, we fished South the first day for Dorado and a few shots at some stripers, lots of wind made East Cape fishing just ok.
The second day {Wednesday} we fished the North towards the East Cape bouys at Punta Pescadero. A nice bull Dorado and a #150 pound striper for my first timer brother Tom.
The other 2 days were spent on my new tin boat. The beach at East Cape is steeper since "Marty", still very doable. Day one { Tuesday}, was spent getting use to the boat. We still managed Dorado off of the shark bouys near the South.
Day 2 {Thursday} found us a first light trolling the area from Punta Arena to the Punta Pescadero. Mid way I found a Sailfish sleeping. No live bait tank. I had small jet heads out, so we turned on him. The second pass he flared and charged the Mexican flag Jet. I gunned the boat and we were on. The fight close and he jumped so many times close to the boat we were soaked! Easy release to fight another day.
Went back in the pick up my sons Nate{10} and Joe{14} to hunt for some Dorado. Right in front of Verdugos we worked another Striper, just past the Cruisers.
We headed towards Ranch Leanero and found a Shark Bouy with lots of Dorado. Caught and released East Cape Dorado until are arms were too sore to fish. In the end I was tossing a Pili popper without any hooks just to watch them whack the lure on the surface. I forgot how much fun a Tin Boat can be. Lots of Roosters and Jacks chasing bait on the Beach, and few Dorado were seen off the docks. Some bigger Bulls in the 50# range and a 45# Wahoo were caught during our stay.
