July 10, 2004, Gary Barnes-Webb, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing, Mexico:

Warm summer weather at East Cape, with mornings in the low 70's and warm days to the mid 90's, with warmer than usual water temp 85+, and calm, clear conditions with some afternoon SE breezes. Extraordinary fishing continues at East Cape, with limits of marlin and dorado for all East Cape anglers. Lots of good bait keeping the fish close in.

Billfish - blues, stripers and sailfish throughout the bay, very spread, lots of tailers, with the blues north, 10-15 miles out. Some larger blues this week, including a 700lb monster. Fish biting equally well on bait and lures.

Dorado - Limits for all. lots schooling inside, 300 yds to 4 miles out, averaging 10lbs, taking mostly live bait. Big bulls to 45lbs outside, mixed in with marlin.

Yellowfin tuna - under porpoise, about 20-30 miles out. Some quality fish (largest this week 80lbs) but very light pressure with most anglers staying inside.

Inside - big roosterfish everywhere from Leonero south to the lighthouse (largest 60lbs). Lots of 40-50 pounders, mixed in with jacks and pompano. Big pargo this week also, with fish to 40 lbs mixed in with the roosters.

Fisherman of the Week - Local angler Mike O'Dell, while fishing on his cruiser Sonrisa, took a 700lb blue marlin.

Eddie Dalmau of Hotel Punta Colorada said first time East Cape angler J.R. Kehoe and his brother Christian fished three days out of the hotel for a total catch including released fish of: two striped marlin, 13 roosterfish, 16 dorado, seven yellowfin tuna, and one wahoo.
