FROM THE HOTEL THIS WEEK AT BUENA VISTA BEACH RESORT
July 25, 2004, Axel Valdez, Buena Vista Beach Resort, East Cape, Baja, Mexico Fishing:
This week's East Cape fishing and Condition report brought to you by Arturo in charge of land crew.
From: Jul 16th-22nd, 2004
Total boats out: 92. Fishermen: 245. Weather Temperature: 96 - 99. Water Temperature: 82 - 85. Blue Marlin 11. Striped Marlin 13. Sailfish 15. Dorado 194. Tuna 86. Wahoo 2. Roosterfish 5. Snapper 40. Jack Crevalle 4. Amberjack 8. Bonita 22. Pompano 2. Triggerfish 16. Skip Jack 11. Needle fish 100.
East Cape Fishing Water Temperature: Really good sea condition with Thursday as an exception as we had rain and a little wind that got everyone went, but besides that our ocean couldn't be any better .
East Cape Air Temperature: Very nice and hot, but late in the week a very nice breeze has blown during the latter part of the day and cooling the day off very nicely. It has been cloudy most of the week at East Cape, with big clouds up in the Sierra de La Laguna chain, and it was nice to get wet two days in a row, but just enough to start getting everything green here. Great weather anyways.
East Cape Fishing Spots and Distance: Blues are hitting where the tuna are, this is around 30-40 miles out, but there has also been several blues hitting while fishing for stripers, around 20-35 miles. You could see the East Cape fishing boats fishing for dorado from the hotel, you can imagine how close they were. Snapper together with some small tuna in the "pescaderos" (Fish wholes) in front of La Rivera. Distances range from 15:00 to 1:45 minutes depending what you want to fish for.
East Cape Offshore Fishing: Big tuna up over 100 lbs you can find the school and they'll take a while to bite, but once the bite starts you are in for a good fight. Also my brother caught the 531 lbs blue right after catching a 80 lbs tuna, so they are there as well. Dorado is very close and they are school dorado, small to medium sizes, small tuna are also biting here. Very good size snappers in the morning right in front of La Rivera.
East Cape Inshore Fishing: Nice size roosters around the sandy beaches, but you got to be patience, specially due too the many needlefish. We went bottom fishing, and it was great we caught over 10 species of small to medium size fish. A lot of fun and action, the best if you are bringing your kids, so they can get hook on fishing.
Successful Lures: Petrolero (brown with orange and little gray), Chivato (Yellow, orange, with black stripes), Purpura (black with purple) are the best. I won't change them as they continue to be hot. Once again I leave it as they are, for fishing
Bait Used: Some mackerel, caballitos and the sardine was not as good as last week, it seems to be very small, captains opting better to stay with the mackerel. Dorados are eating chum too, therefore no need of sardine.
Highlight of the Week: Good to very good over all East Cape fishing. You can go and not fish anything, but you can also go and catch the tuna or billfish of a lifetime.
