LEONERO BOATS FIND LOTS OF STRIPED MARLIN THROUGHOUT THE BAY
July 24, 2004, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing, Baja Sur, Mexico Report:
Warm summer weather, with mornings in the low 70's and warm humid days to the mid 90's, with a couple of days of overcast late in the week with an occasional shower, and variable water temp 81-85 deg. A decent week at East Cape, with striped marlin and limits of dorado topping the fare.
Billfish - lots of striped marlin, spread throughout the bay, about 15 miles out, with the best results coming from teasing the fish with lures, then throwing live bait on the tailers.
Dorado - schooling fish inside, about 1-3 miles offshore from Leonero to the lighthouse, averaging 10-15lbs, taking mostly live bait and hoochies, limits for all. Big bulls to 45lbs outside, mixed in with marlin, taking trolled lures.
Yellowfin tuna - under porpoise, concentrated about 15 miles off the lighthouse, with fish to 70lbs (ave. 20lbs) taking live bait, hoochies and cedar plugs.
Inside - the roosterfish bite has returned to East Cape, with fish to 40lbs cruising the beaches from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking live bait.
Fisherman of the Week - Mike Griffin of Salinas, CA, while fishing 3 days on a cruiser, took limits of dorado to 45lbs each day, a 70lb tuna, and released 2 striped marlin.
