FLY ACTION TOPS FISHING WITH REBEL LURES
DURING OUTING NEAR EAST CAPE'S RANCHO LEONERO

July 26, 2004, Fred Green, Rancho Leonero, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

We had relatives visiting us at our house, Casa Verde, at Rancho Leonero. We are just 9 lots south of the resort. I took my sister Pat Magunson of Pleasant Hill, CA, out for a few hours of morning fishing in my little 12' "tin" boat. The water was calm. We fish between 300 to 800 yards out in front of our house and resort, past the boat buoys. She caught her first dorado on a fly rod. She caught 2 dorado, in the 10 to 12 lb range, and a good size needlefish, all on the fly rod. She released the fish. She was using a fly that resembled a small sardine. I don't have the spec. on the other equipment she used. The interesting part of the story was, her fly was in the water for less than a total of 5 minutes for her 3 fish. She was heard to yell, "This is the first time I have ever seen the backing on my reel".

As the fish made it's first mighty run, with a big smile on her face. Pat did not sight cast for her dodos. We started out trolling 2 silver 5" broken Rebels behind 2 conventional rods. For an hour or so there was no action. Pat asked me if she could use her fly equipment since she had not had a chance to use it to this point on her trip. I was still trolling as she assembled, threaded and tied her tippets and fly to her four sectioned fly rod. She stripped line off her fly reel as I headed toward the buoys so she could cast around them. Her fly was not in the water more than a minute or two minutes when the first dodo hit her fly. The same thing happened for her second one, except faster. The needlefish was even faster. It hit as she was stripping the line out. The fly was in the water maybe 30 seconds. Needless to say, she was a happy camper.
