A YELLOWFIN TUNA WEIGHING 150 POUNDS LANDED
ABOARD THE EAST CAPE CHARTER FISHING BOAT MARLA D II
July 30, 2004, Dale Brown, Hotel Playa del Sol, Baja California Sur, East Cape fishing, Mexico:
I and my friends Tom Hutches and Gary Hall fished out of Hotel Playa Del Sol on the cruiser "Maria D ll" with captain Martin Lucero during the week of July 25th .
We caught 6 sailfish, 1 Marlin (all released), 20 Dorado, 6 football size yellowfin tuna, and the Largest tuna of my life, a 150 pound yellowfin which took over 2 hours to bring to the gaff. This tuna now resides in our freezers.
My friends and I have been fishing East Cape out of Playa for the past 10 years and we are already planning our trip for next year. Great people, great hotel and most of all great fishing.
We fished for five days. On the day we caught the big tuna, we had gone to the South about 35 miles. We had just found porpoise and had not been trolling for more than 5 minutes when the fish hit. I was pulling a natural color cedar plug and when the fish hit he ripped off over three hundred yards before slowing down. This is the largest tuna I have ever landed and without question a better fighter than any big fish I have ever hooked.
Last Year I hooked a large Blue Marlin but the strength of this yellowfin tuna was more impressive. I have read many of Ray Cannon's fishing articles in Western Outdoor News and freely admit he was the reason I started going down south.
