EAST CAPE BILLFISH ACTION THIS WEEK MOSTLY FOR SAILFISH
Sept. 11, 2004, Roy Baldwin, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Warm weather all week, with mornings in the low 70's and afternoon highs to the low-90s, with warm, calm, blue water and temp 86-90 deg. The wide-open tuna and dorado bite continues, with limits for all anglers. Lots of sailfish, some marlin, and a few wahoo. East Cape fishing action is very spread, with fish from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, with the tuna and dorado 3-5 miles offshore, and the billfish 10-15 miles out.
Billfish - the bite was mixed, with lots of sailfish, but fewer striped marlin and blue marlin spread throughout the bay. Live mackerel presented to tailing fish and trolled squid colored lures working best.
Dorado - the bite has spread, with pods of fish from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, 3-5 miles out, with fish averaging 15-20 bs, taking mostly live sardinas and hoochies, limits for all. Big bulls to 50 lbs outside, taking trolled lures.
Yellowfin Tuna - the hot bite continues. No longer under porpoise, schools of tuna from 15-60 lbs taking live bait, hoochies and cedar plugs. All boats limiting out, with tuna from Leonero to Cabo Pulmo, 3-5 miles out.
Wahoo - several wahoo this week, mostly on trolled lures, from Cabo Pulmo south to Los Frailes.
Inside - no pressure at all, with a few released roosterfish, as most boats are concentrating on the hot tuna/dorado bite.
Fisherman of the Week - Doug Quinn of Cardiff, CA, while fishing 2 days on a panga and 1 day on a cruiser, took limits of tuna to 35 lbs, dorado to 40lbs, and 1 wahoo.
