CHRISTMAS SEASON DORADO FOUND BY EAST CAPE
FLY FISHERS OFF PUNTA PESCADERO
Dec. 18-23, 2004, Gary Graham, Baja On The Fly, East Cape fly fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Everyone at East Cape is hoping that Santa brings lots of goodies and, as a special gift, takes the North wind with him.
While East Cape fishing continues to be good for this late in the year, the winds have made it difficult to enjoy. On Wednesday there was some decent dorado fishing action around the East Cape shark buoys near Punta Pescadero. The dorado are a nice Christmas present.
If you feel lucky, there are still a few billfish around at East Cape. We counted several marlin and one sailfish on one of the few boats that ventured out.
East Cape Yellowfin Tuna action is still down toward Cabo Pulmo and beyond. It’s an ugly ride home if the dreaded North wind cranks up. There are still some black skipjack schools down toward Cabo Pulmo.
We expect the Sierra this time of year at East Cape, so bring some wire. If you prefer to stay a bit closer to home, the early morning sierra bite at the lighthouse has been great. Any flies with a little blue in them seem to be the hot ticket right now. Bring wire or lots of blue flies!
Windy conditions have made East Cape beach fishing conditions tough. I did hear of several quality roosterfish landed near the lighthouse earlier in the week. For roosterfish and jacks the word “challenging” describes it best.
This is Tim Stelzer’s first report since returning last week from his summer guiding in Alaska. He will be guiding for Baja on the Fly both at East Cape and Magdalena Bay until late April, we are excited to have him back again this year.
East Cape water temperature 70-74. Air temperature 55-73. Wind North 13 m.p.h. Conditions: Scattered Clouds.
