RENTAL HOUSE OFFERED IN EAST CAPE'S LA RIBERA FISHING VILLAGE
Jan. 7, 2005, Mike Reichner, Baja Beach Captain, Punta Colorada beach fishing, East Cape, Baja Sur, Mexico:
Two days of mucho viento kept everyone at home in front of the fire, but I woke up this morning to calm seas and blue sky.
A friend of mine fished with the anchored up East Cape commercial fleet fishing for huachinango (red snapper) today and just slayed 'em. They were fishing bait on the bottom in about 200 feet of water and he just flylined live sardinas behind the boat and couldn't keep the dorado (mahi-mahi) off! They were swarming the boat after awhile and he finally just gave up. He kept two over 35 pounds or so, with many, many more schoolies. It makes sense, a bunch of boats all anchored together, sending down a wad of bait to the bottom, perfect habitat and chum, cover, food, and the predators come running.
The sierra fishing from the East Cape beaches and just offshore continues to offer hot and heavy action for the first two hours or so of daylight each and everyday. Some muy grande specimens right now. I saw one over 15 pounds and have caught two myself from the beach over 10 pounds. They look like wahoo they're so big. Mix in some small jacks and assorted others and that's about it.
I have bought a lot in La Ribera, East Cape. I brought down a big camper this fall and it now sits under the palapa. There is a separate bodega and bano with a toilet and hot shower and the place has a magnificent view of the Sea of Cortez. I'd like to rent the place when I'm up north, $100 a week for the whole package. I put down a flagstone patio and have table, chairs, oven, hot water and stove and oven in the camper, barbeque, plates, silverware, everything you need for fishing at East Cape, baja@bajabeachcaptain.com.
