EAST CAPE TIN BOATS ACTIVELY FISHING IN GOOD WINTER WEATHER

Jan. 23, 2004, Gary Leeper, at Martin Verdugo's Beach Resort, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

The East Cape area has been blessed with some of the finest fishing weather you can ask for in the last few days, and as a result most tin boaters have been active. Charter fishing activity at East Cape has been light. There are many small, 5-10 pound, dorado around and they seem to be everywhere in the fishing area, including the boat lines. A few marlin are being caught at East Cape, but appear scarce, as would be consistent with the 70-degree sea water temperature we are seeing. Sierra are plentiful and on the large side, and scattered from the lighthouse to El Cardonal. No tuna have been spotted at East Cape, but it wouldn't surprise me to have them show up as there is a lot of bait in the area, including ballyhoo, which I had never observed in the area before in numbers. I heard that there was a hot fishing bite on large pargo in the La Ribera area earlier this week, but haven't tried for them personally. When fishing, there are lots of small skipjack to the point of nuisance. Air temperatures at East Cape are in the 60s to 80s.
