EAST CAPE FISHING TRIPS SUCCESSFUL FOR
WINTER DORADO AND SIERRA OFF LA RIBERA

Jan. 27, 2005, Russ Fritz, La Ribera, Baja California Sur, East Cape Mexico Fishing:

When we returned to La Ribera from Magdalena Bay on the west coast of Baja last Friday, the wind had quit and not blown for 2 days, so we changed our tackle for Dorado and went fishing on Saturday.

We had great success fishing for 5 nice East Cape dorado (mahi-mahi), and several huge sierras just 2 to 3 miles off La Ribera. We rested on Sunday, and have gone fishing every day since, for four very nice days East Cape fishing days. Although it sprinkled some yesterday, we still when fishing and got nice dorado, including a 34-pound hen on 17-pound line.

Fred Demuth, from Matagorda, Texas, says that it is his all-time biggest dorado, and that he feels that his arms are a little longer now.

During this fishing out of La Ribera, our 5 day total is 41 dorado, about half of them released, 3 sierras, hooked and fought, as well as a small marlin which our 17-pound line was no match for. The pesky bonito and barrilete by the millions, so we have been catching and releasing at least 5 for every dorado hooked.

The East Cape sea surface temperature at La Ribera is in the 68 to 70 degree range. I believe the dorado are passing through, headed for warmer water.
