EAST CAPE ANGLERS CATCHING DORADO LIMITS
BUT FEW WERE FISHING THIS WEEK

Jan. 21-27, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape fishing, Baja, Mexico:

Charters 14. Anglers 42. Total Fish 131. Fish/Charter 9.36. Fish/Angler 3.12. Striped Marlin 8. Dorado 123. Yellowfin Tuna 12. Water Temperature 68-73. Air Temperature 80-58.

We had a decent week of East Cape weather in terms of the wind, and the fish count picked up. Anglers were limiting out on Dorado and several fortunate souls managed to land some Striped Marlin as well. The problem? Not enough hooks in the water.

We saw beautiful, wind-free days for most of the reporting week until the wind picked up a bit on Thursday. We saw air temps range between a near perfect 58-80. Terrafin informs us of a water temp range of 68-73 this past week. The full moon came and went and we are now waning towards a last quarter. Bait-wise, we had mackerel, but still no sardines.

We saw several striped marlin landed this past week. All were reportedly landed in waters to the north off Punta Pescadero in the vicinity of the shark buoys. Mackerel and lures did the trick there.

The real story is obviously the dorado (mahi-mahi) bite. Anglers were limiting out on Dorado all week. Again, the waters to the north between Punta Pescadero and El Cardonal (2-4 miles) were the places to be. The poundage is not real high at this point, with most fish coming in at the 10-20 pound range.
