EAST CAPE VACATIONERS FIND SOME SPORTFISHING ACTION FOR YELLOWFIN TUNA

March 18-24, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Charters 108. Anglers 270. Total Fish 147. Fish/Charter 1.36. Fish/Angler .54. Striped Marlin 22. Sailfish 1. Dorado 14. Yellowfin Tuna 99. Wahoo 2. Pompano 1. Roosterfish 8. Water Temperature 65-74. Air Temperature 82-56.

Winds Tues-Thurs were calm in the a.m. with slight breezes developing in the p.m.

The yellowfin bite picked up. The overall East Cape catch rate this past week was about 37% so that was not only nice, but also the saving grace for the week. Most are in the 10-20 lb. class, but as we always say, "footballs are better than no balls." Most of the fishing action was reported at about 40 miles out between the waters off Los Barriles and Rancho Leonero to the south.

East Cape fishing for Dorado is pretty hit and miss right now. The good news is that the Yellowfin Tuna bite picked up nicely. Keep in mind that the "real season" is just about to start at East Cape, and we're looking to start hitting on all cylinders here in the near future. By that I mean fishing for the big three, Striped Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, and Dorado.

There's the usual anticipation in the air here at East Cape, both among the locals, as well as among our visiting amigos from the north. We just know it's going to be a great fishing season down here on the East Cape.

The East Cape sportfishing vacation area saw some afternoon winds pick up on Fri-Mon which may have affected the fishing a bit. Tues-Thurs was pretty calm. We saw air temperatures range between 56-82 degrees so it's next to perfect in that regard. The water temperature saw a range of 65-74 degrees Bait-wise, East Cape still has an abundance of mackerel and a shortage of sardines.

Much like the Dorado bite, Striped Marlin fishing at East Cape was pretty hit and miss. Limited action was reported to the north of Punta Pescadero, 12-13 miles, and in the vicinity of the shark buoy stops, as well as out near the 88.

Dorado fishing at East Cape has really taken a beating over the last month or so. However, those that are being landed are pretty nice fish indeed. Limited action was reported to the north off Punta Pescadero at the shark buoy stops, as well as to the south off Punta Arena.
