ANOTHER DORADO WINNER CAUGHT IN THE
WESTERN OUTDOOR NEWS DAILY FISHING JACKPOT
April 17, 2005, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape, Baja California Sur, Mexico, W.O.N. Fishing Tournament Report:
East Cape fishing changed markedly on Saturday. Tuna moved in closer, with fish of 10-35 pounds under porpoise about 25 miles straight out. Dorado were closer inshore. Angler Gary Spike took the Western Outdoor News (WON.) Fiesta Pesca jackpot with a 49 pound dorado. A hot sierra bite developed inshore.
April 16, 2005:
East Cape had warming spring fishing weather, with pleasant mornings near 70 and afternoon highs to the mid 80s, with mostly clear, sunny days, some early morning low clouds, burning off by midmorning, and calm mornings with afternoon breezes. The East Cape sportfishing area had one day of north wind at midweek, settling back down by the weekend. East Cape fishing water temperatures are holding steady at 69-71 degrees. It was a mixed fishing week at East Cape, with marlin, dorado, tuna and roosterfish all active.
The hot Striped Marlin fishing off La Ribera has cooled a bit, but there are still plenty of marlin to go around, with fish taking live mackerel either slow-trolled or cast on tailing fish, as well as trolled lures.
Tuna are a long boat ride, about 40 to 50 miles straight out, with fish to 50 pounds under porpoise taking mostly live bait and hoochies. There was no pressure on tuna as most anglers concentrating on the inside bite.
Some dorado to 25 pounds were taking live bait and trolled lures, about 10 miles outside, spread throughout the bay.
Inside, roosterfish continue to bite aggressively, with some jacks mixed in, from La Ribera south to the lighthouse, with fish from 10-20 pounds taking mostly live mullet. Pargo, cabrilla and jacks were on the reefs from Leonero to La Ribera.
