EAST CAPE'S STRIPED MARLIN BITE IS CENTERED ABOUT 15 MILES OFF LA RIBERA
April 30, 2005, John Ireland, Rancho Leonero, East Cape fishing, Mexico:
East Cape had typical spring fishing weather, with pleasant mornings near 70 and afternoon highs to the mid 80s, with clear, sunny days and mostly calm mornings with intermittent north winds on several days.
The East Cape fishing area had warming water temperatures of 71-73 degrees, green water inside as the winds have churned things up. It was another mixed week of fishing at East Cape, with marlin, dorado, pargo and sierra all active on the calmer days.
The East Cape striped Marlin bite about 15 miles straight off La Ribera remains productive, with the best results coming from teasing the fish with lures, then throwing live bait on the tailers.
Few East Cape charter fishing boats were chasing tuna, as they have moved way outside, about 50 miles off Los Frailes. Football-sized fish are under porpoise taking live bait, cedar plugs and hoochies.
Dorado to 40 pounds are taking exclusively live bait, very close to the beaches, spread throughout the bay.
Inside fishing at East Cape had lots of nice pargo to 25 pounds, and a good sierra bite on the reefs from Leonero to the lighthouse, taking weighted live bait.
