ERRATIC WATER TEMPERATURES AND SCATTERED
FISHING FOUND BY EAST CAPE BOATS THIS WEEK

May 28, 2005, Roy Baldwin, Rancho Leonero, East Cape, Mexico Fishing Report:

East Cape had early summer fishing weather, with cool mornings in the mid 60's and afternoon highs to the low 90's, clear, sunny days and mostly calm mornings with some afternoon breezes.

Water temperatures in the East Cape vacation area remain erratic, with 80 degrees off Cerralvo to 68 degrees off Los Frailes. With the shifting water temperature, the bite remains spread throughout the bay. The inside bite is hot, with big roosterfish, pargo and pompano all biting aggressively near shore, with more wahoo showing up all the time.

Billfish fishing is all over, from Punta Pescadero to Los Frailes, with most fish taken in a band from 10-15 miles out, with lots of tailing striped marlin. The fish remain picky biters, with fish taking live bait and trolled lures equally well. This should improve as the water temp stabilizes.

Tuna fishing at East Cape remains way outside, about 45-50 miles off Los Frailes. It's hit-or-miss for tuna of 10-20 pounds under porpoise taking cedar plugs and hoochies.

Dorado fishing was off this week at East Cape with few dorado taken.

Some nice wahoo from 45-90 pounds came in this week, from both north and south, taken on marlin lures.

Inside, BIG roosterfish were close in again this week. A 60 pound gallo was taken and released from our pier. The fish are from 10-60 pounds off the beaches from Leonero to Las Barracas, taking live bait, with shore fishermen taking some nice fish with chrome lures and bait. Pargo to 35 pounds and pompano are taking bait off Los Frailes.
