WATER TEMPERATURES DROP AGAIN AT EAST CAPE DIVING SPOTS

May 28, 2005, Ash Pickering, Vista Sea Sport, East Cape diving, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Looks like that cold current we were hoping we were rid of has come back to bite us at East Cape. Just as we were about to put away the 5mm wetties, the water temperatures plummeted to a chilly 66 degrees over a couple of days, unfortunately bringing with it some days of 20-40 feet visibility. Lucky for us though, the fish seem not to mind, and there are still huge quantities of fish around the area. We had the privilege of touring with Jonathan Roldan of Tailhunter International, who worked out of Los Frailes, back before the Cabo Pulmo park became a protected zone. He said, "The park is really working. I saw more fish on that dive than I saw during the entire last season I worked down here!" We're still hoping to be able to put those 5mm suits away in the next week or two. In reality, the cool water keeps those cool water species hanging around.
