INSHORE FISHING WATER AT EAST CAPE IS COLD AND GREEN THIS WEEK

June 5, 2005, Russ Fritz, La Ribera, East Cape, Baja fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Cold and greenish water inshore, as well as no-bite marlin outside, were the topics around the campfires in the East Cape fishing area this week. Sporadic tuna bites, with some good ones on Tuesday just north of the Punta Arena light, produced lots of 20 to 30 pound tuna. On Wednesday, we sighted over 25 marlin and sailfish, none of which would take lures, live bait, or rigged ballyhoo. I suspect that they are full of flying fish, as we found multiple schools of a hundred or more of the flyers. Quite a sight to see a hundred flyers burst out of the water and scatter, like a huge covey of quail. Yesterday, the inshore water was a coolish 71 degrees, and full of roosters and toros. Offshore 6 to 10 miles, the water was blue & 76 degrees. The marlin we sighted still refused a bait, and just seemed to play with the lures in the spread. We hooked, fought, and lost only 1, who was playing with a blue & white skirted lure.

Hopefully the fishing action will warm up next week at East Cape, as there are plenty of marlin out there.
