GOOD SWORDFISH SEASON SHAPING UP FOR ANGLERS FISHING AT EAST CAPE

June 3-9, 2005, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape, Baja California Sur fishing, Mexico:

Charters 571. Anglers 1,691. Total Fish 1,243. Fish/Charter 2.18. Fish/Angler .73. Catch including released fish: Striped Marlin 353. Sailfish 8. Dorado 57. Yellowfin Tuna 799. Wahoo 6. Pompano 1. Roosterfish 15. Water Temperature 68-80. Air Temperature 95-61. Seas on Friday-Thursday, calm all day.

Although the all important fish-per numbers fail to reflect it, East Cape fishing is pretty good right now. The fishing picked up nicely over the latter part of the reporting week, so the current conditions are a bit better than the numbers indicate.

The Striped Marlin bite pretty much doubled over the past week, in the East Cape vacation area.

We are absolutely having a phenomenal swordfish season. East Cape saw 4 landed just this past week!

Unfortunately, East Cape Dorado fishing is still pretty hit and miss, although among the Dodo being landed, there are some really nice fish.

The Yellowfin Tuna bite remained consistently strong this past week and anglers are reporting a lot of fun there. There's a ton of anglers down here right now.

The calm wind and sea conditions continued at East Cape as the days have been next to perfect. Last week saw air temperatures range between 61-95 degree.

Terrafin has shown us a water temperature range of 68-80 degrees. There's been a colder water front hanging offshore at the Gordo Banks and on south. Meanwhile, there's been a warm water front hanging way offshore beginning about 90 miles off the Gordo Banks and easing westward the further north it gets. That water has been reaching temps up to about 82-83. However, it's been a bit far to reach in that the front is about 80 miles off Los Frailes, 60 miles off Punta Arena, 50 miles off Los Barriles and Punta Pescadero, and so on. Towards the end of the reporting week, the warmer water was within range of East Cape anglers in the vicinity of the 88 bank.

Overall the water temperature this year has been a bit on the cool side. In fact, our crew in Cabo has been reporting some really cool water temps, such that we've been processing some Sierra and Yellowtail. That's really unusual for this late in the year. Anyhow, that partly explains the type of year we've seen to date. SLOW!

Bait-wise, we've got a plethora of mackerel, mullet, sardines, ballyhoo, and jurelito.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot! Smokedogg got a really cool birthday gift. It's one of those neat 32-foot Blackfin Flybridge with a marlin tower! She's currently on a barge this side of the Panama Canal, steaming her way towards La Paz. This boat, the "Senorita Bonita", gives new meaning to the words "fully loaded" amigos! Capt. Paco, formerly of the Billfighter fame, and more recently, as the captain of the "Too Awesome," has decided to join forces with the good guys and that can only bode well for the fortunes of the "Senorita Bonita". The boat should be available for charters as of July 1, 2005.
