EAST CAPE SUMMER FISHING PICKS UP THE PACE
June 15, 2006, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, East Cape fising, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
Fishing at East Cape is pretty hot, with anglers reporting nice Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado bites.
East Cape anglers had an overall yellowfin tuna catch rate of about 82 percent close in to the south, as well as to the north off Punta Pescadero.
The Dorado bite at East Cape is pretty much going off right now as anglers had an overall catch rate of about 70 percent to the south between the waters of Rancho Leonero, La Ribera, Punta Colorada, Los Cerritos, Las Barracas, Cabo Pulmo, Los Frailes, Destiladeras, and El Faro.
The billfish bite was consistent, with a couple of Black Marlin and a couple of nice Blue Marlin landed this past week, including a 600-plus and 524 pounder. That was a surprise. It's early for the big marlin to be in the waters of the East Cape.
East Cape air temperatures had a range of about 70-100 degrees. Water temps were about 75-86 degrees, with a pretty windless week except for some stout winds out of the southeast on Thursday. The moon spent the better part of the reporting week at or near full, but that apparently didn't affect the fishing much. Bait-wise, we've got mackerel, sardines and limited ballyhoo.
East Cape anglers were able to generate an overall billfish catch rate of about 16 percent. The Blue Marlin were both reportedly landed to the south off La Ribera and Los Frailes. East Cape had a decent Striped Marlin bite this week, mostly to the south between the waters of La Ribera, Punta Colorada, Punta Arena, Cabo Pulmo, and Las Tachuelas.
Rounding out the report were 20 Wahoo reportedly landed to the north off Punta Pescadero, straight off Los Barriles, and to the south off Rancho Leonero, Los Cerritos, and El Faro. Rapalas and ballyhoo reportedly did the trick there.
