ENSENADA FISHING TRIP BY THE MARINA CORAL BOAT BAD DOG
May 29, 2004, Steve Ross, Bad Dog, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico Fishing:
Bad Dog arrived at the Bajo at first light and did laps over the top for nada.
There were reports of yellowtail being caught there. After 45 minutes of no jig strikes, no birds, and no bait in the 63-degree water, we progressed toward the lighthouse on North Todos Santos Island for the traditional yellowtail bite.
Halfway between Bajo San Miguel and the north end, we got a double jig strike on two Rapalas. One was the mackerel color the other the brown color.
I reeled up an 18 pounder and Juan Lu Cardenas reeled up a 22 pounder. It was 3-foot seas in the bay, and the wind was at least 10 knots. We noticed that the Ensenada Clipper and other Mexican boats had appeared at the Bajo so we trolled around the outside of the islands around the inside of the Punta Banda rocks and over to the Bajo where we fished for shallow water rock cod.
We caught two ling cod and five sculpin on iron. My sculpin was a whopper 3 pounder. We lost five good chrome jigs in the rocky spires of Bajo San Miguel as we drifted over the tops and down the sides of these steep rocks. This was my attempt to fish the local yellowtail bite. It never materialized. This Saturday we will return to offshore and fish the "Boot" also known as the "Inner Bank" consisting of the 238 spot.
