GOOD CALICO BASS FISHING AT CORONADO ISLANDS

June 20, 2004, Joe Martin, Coronado Islands, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:

My wife Bev,son Jeff Martin and myself made a run out to the south kelp at the Coronado Islands 6/19 and took home 15 Calico Bass, largest being 5 1/2 lbs. Bev caught one Ling Cod going 15 1/2 inches.

We also ran in to the Bull Ring for the end of the morning Sand Bass bite and kept five, two to three pounders, and the rest around fourteen inches.

We then ran back out to Puky Pt. and out of many small Sculpin managed two keepers.

Weather was overcast in the morning and it actually got warm as the sun almost made it out in the afternoon.

Water temp. was 66 degrees and fish were taken on live Sardines and Fish Traps of various patterns.

On 6/20 son Jeff and neighbor Jeff Grennen and myself went out to the 371 and trolled for albies and searched in vain for kelp paddies.

One small Bonito was caught on a Grn./Blk. feather and that was it. No fish there, no birds, no boats, no paddies, no nada.

We stopped at the south kelp at the islands, where we had fished the previous day. Jeff Martin managed one nice sized Calico.

Weather was cold and windy with a large wind chop. We drank a lot of water on the way back to Point Loma. We tried one last time fishing the breakwater across from Pt. Loma for Halibut.

Jeff Martin nailed one Halibut of twenty inches which we released. Nice fish, just short. Bait was again Sardines.
