STEADY LOCAL ENSENADA FISHING ABOARD MARK BLUCKER'S NEW 17-FOOT BOAT
July 18, 2004, Mark Blucker, La Jolla Camp, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico Fishing:
Paul Ward and brothers Mark Blucker (Me) and Eric von Blucker, all from Costa Mesa, fished Punta Bandaw early in the week for good fishing on the 'cudas and bass with 1 or 2 yellows per day. Bass were hitting sardines and plastics, yellows were caught with rapalas/yozuri by most of the boats.
We got one with a slow trolled mac. Paul let it run a little to eat the mac, hooked up and fought the fish for a minute before the fish wrapped around a bouy (gillnet) line. Beto Zamora was near by and so was the panga Valencia, they waved us off a little while they pulled up the bouy. As all the boats came together we could see the 'tail swimming around the bouy line and I nailed it with my new 7' bamboo gaff. Best fish of the trip, 16 lbs(?)- 36" long. Thanks for the help guys! (Yes, we tipped 'em).
Water temps were 69 at the point and up to 76 in the bay. Pretty bumpy the first two days, nice the third day and glassy smooth for days after we left!
We fished on my "new" boat, another 17 alum that has a 70 yamaha and an extra foot of beam. And a 4hp kicker. Much more seaworthy but with no beach wheels on the boat we put a big wheel on the trailer tounge and rolled the rig in, pulling it out with a rope. No probem with 3 guys, no waves and a light boat.
