FISHING OUTSIDE ENSENADA'S PUNTA BANDA ROCKS FOR 5 YELLOWTAIL ON IRON

June 12, 2005, Steve Ross, Bad Dog, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:

Departing Marina Coral at 05:00 on Saturday, Steve and Gail Ross with Marinero "Jando" Ruiz on Bad Dog arrived inside of the Punta Banda rocks at first light and began trolling Yozuris and Rapalas.

Three barracuda were caught on the troll at dawn, in 62.5 degree green water and 5 foot ground swells. Many Ensenada fishing boats showed up by sunrise and it became competitive to run and shoot iron on working birds. We caught one 15 inch yellowtail on the troll while watching the Vonny Fleet pangas outperform us.

By 11:00 a.m. we decided to troll through the "Little Canal" and try the other side of the Punta Banda rocks. Once through the pass, we turned south where we were alone with spouting whales, porpoise and huge spots of foaming yellowtail, where we boated 5 out of 7, 12-15 pound yellowtail by throwing iron.
