GOOD YELLOWTAIL ACTION AT THE ENSENADA 238 AND 295 SPOTS
WITH MATADOR SPORTFISHING
Sept. 4, 2005, Emerald Argonza, Matador Sportfishing, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:
Fishing on the Matador at Ensenada on Sept. 1, 2005, with me skippering the boat with 3 anglers we fished the 238 and 295 spots and boated a total of 32 yellowtail, 1 dorado, and 2 rockcod caught on the way in at Soledad on a 5 minute stop.
All the yellowtail were caught under kelp and with live bait, and the same with the dorado.
The water temperature in the fishing area was 69 degrees, and the water was very clean with a little swell, but not as bad as last week.
I skippered the Matador again yesterday Sept. 3rd. with 4 anglers and headed south towards the lower 500 spot and started trolling at around 5:45 which proved to be slow since fish are very reluctant to bite. We did get our first hookup around 11:45 when a dorado hit a red-and-white 6-inch tuna feather, and it was followed by 2 more dodos that inhaled 6-inch sardines, and we were finally seeing some action.
We boated 3 good sized dorado with the heaviest close to 37 pounds. The GPS location for this fishing spot was 31.20 117.14.
We then started trolling and got one more dorado strike on the same feather and 2 more live bait fish at around 2:45 p.m. and managed to boat 2 more dorados with one lost after a good 40 minute fight, and finally breaking the 15-pound mono. All 5 dorados weighed from 33 pounds to 37 pounds.
Some other Ensenada fishing boats also boated dorados and yellowfin tuna up to 35 pounds.
A private boat called the Calculator was skippered by my friend David Silva and had a real good day of fishing with limits of dorado and yellowfin tuna. The water temperature in the fishing area off Ensenada was 69.7 degrees.
