ALBACORE, YELLOWFIN, BLUEFIN TUNA AT 238 SPOT
June 17, 2006, Steve Ross, Wide Open, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:
We departed Marina Coral at midnight on Saturday morning in search of bait for fishing off Ensenada aboard Tom McInally's 43-foot Bertram "Wide Open."
Fishing on board the Wide Open was Bad Dog, Juan Lu, the Russiana "Slev," and the owner Tom McInally.
We arrived at the Ensenada 238 spot at first light and began trolling for not much until we headed north 10 miles and we began catching albacore on the troll. The best jig was the 7-Strand "Carrot Top" Tuna Clone.
There were jumping bluefin tuna in what turned from 64 degree blue water into 66 degree blue water.
On one jig strike Slev caught a 28 pound bluefin tuna on a live sardine and 20 pound test. We caught one more bluefin tuna on a jig strike of a 7-Strand "Mexican Flag" Tuna Clone.
Our total catch for the day while fishing in this area was 4 Albacore to 27 pounds all above 20 pounds, 2 Bluefin Tuna about the same size, 2 small yellowtail under 10 pounds on the troll, and 2 Bonito on the troll.
