MATADOR CHARTER BOAT SPORTFISHING AT SOLEDAD REEF
Nov. 18, 2006, Emerald Argonza, Matador Sportfishing, Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico:
I skippered our charter fishing boat Matador out of Ensenada yesterday the 17th of November and also on the 4th of November with a total of 8 passengers chartered by Vjet Sevilla of Chino Hills, Calif.
On our 4th of November trip earlier in the month, the fishing was really slow due to a strong current and wind blowing up to 15 knots in the San Jose area and only produced 11 lingcod and 12 red rockcod.
Fishing out of Ensenada yesterday, Nov. 17th, we did manage to have an excellent day although we did not have any live bait and used frozen squid to finish the day early with a total count of 14 salmon grouper to 6 pounds, 47 red rockcod to 5 pounds, 18 white fish, 4 sugarhead bass to 2 pounds each and 2 cowcod up to 8 pounds each.
We fished at the Soledad Reef and Ensenada fishing area weather cooperated with us this time, with only 4 to 6 foot swells and a nice and sunny day.
The water temperature was at 58 degrees.
All fish were taken using squid strip bait on 3-hook leaders and the fishing depths were down to 300 feet which made it a little more of a workout for some of the guys, but well worth it since the fish were biting really good.
A single sea lion did take his fair share from our catch, but we all look at it as paying our taxes to "sancho" as we fondly call the creature.
