SAILFISH KEEP BITING THROUGH THE FULL MOON PERIOD
June 4, 2004, Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Ixtapa Zihuatanejo: The oncoming full moon had little or no effect on the offshore fishing as the sailfish bite turned up a notch last week.
The inshore fishery at Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is alive with yellowtail jacks, (jack crevalle) bonito and big eye, was void of any consistent roosterfish action, which is a surprise for this time of year.
Leading the offshore pack was Captain Adolfo and Captain Cheva, fishing 5 days with the Engles Group. In that time, the group landed 39 sailfish, 35 yellowfin tuna, (school size) 4 roosterfish, 3 yellowtail jacks, 38 bonito and 7 needlefish.
Chicago anglers, Fred Aigner's group, fishing Ixtapa Zihuatanejo aboard the "Dos Hermanos II", "Secuestro de Amor", and "Moramy", landed 6 sailfish, 2 dorado, 10 yellowtail jacks, 4 bigeye jacks, 30 bonitos and 2 needlefish for two fishing days.
Mr. Lo, fishing aboard the "Janeth" for 2 days, landed 5 yellowtail jacks, 8 bonitos, 3 needlefish, 2 sailfish and missed 2 others.
Dale Hustrulid, fishing aboard the "marlin Azul", released 2 sailfish.
First time visitors, John and Sue Cliff, fishing aboard the "Secuestro de Amor", landed 4 yellowfin tuna and 1 sailfish on a fly, then landed 4 bigeye jacks on another inshore day.
Mr. 7 Mrs. Cliff had also fished 2 offshore days aboard the "Dos Hermanos II for 6 sailfish and losing another.
Brad Miller & Mike Cummings, fishing aboard the La Bamba, with Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Captain Jose, landed 1 roosterfish, 8 yellowtail jacks, 8 bonitos and 4 needlefish. Angler Mr. Silva, fishing with Captain Jose, landed 6 sailfish for 2 fishing days.
Buffalo, NY angler, Larry Kent, landed an estimated 200 lb. blue marlin and then had another big marlin eat two live bonitos at the same time, hooking the fish on two separate hooks. As luck would have, the fish was able to throw both hooks and the estimated 400-plus pounder was off to grow larger for another day. They were trolling live baits from Z-wing downriggers.
