FISHING IS LOUSY WITH BAIT SCARCE
June 26, 2005, Lyle Coleman, Las Arenas, La Paz, Mexico Fishing Trip Report:
I just returned from La Paz. Fishing was lousy and bait was scarce. A few old reliables said it's the worst season in 17 years. I heard it's the same or worse at Cabo. I caught one nice roosterfish, 35 pounds and a few tiny pargo in 3 days of fishing. Some got less, and a few were skunked. There were no Tuna, Marlin, or Wahoo, very few small Dorado.
I fished all over with Gerardo's Capt. Hugo, who worked his butt off, to no avail. Water conditions when I arrived were green, cool, and fairly dirty. The wind had blown for the previous 5 days. My last fishing day, June 25th, the conditions had improved to cleaner, bluer, warmer water, but still very few fish were caught and nothing of notable size. Hugo, my Captain, attributes the poor fishing to the commercial outfits which have been frequenting the area recently. Catching bait was also difficult, and this is the end of June!
I've noticed that the good fishing is arriving later and later each year for the past 10 years. I used to start going at the beginning of April. Now, I don't even think about it until the end of June. I'm going back the beginning of August. We'll see what happens then.
