TUNA AT LAS ARENAS
Aug. 26, 2006, Gerardo Hernandez, Tortuga Sportfishing, Las Arenas, Baja California Sur, Mexico:
We had a week of changeable weather in the La Paz fishing area on some days, due to the tropical depression that affected us, with some rough seas, some rains, and temperatures in the 90s.
In our fishing areas, around Punta Arena and south of Bahia de Suenos, we had some days of good yellowfin tuna fishing, principally off El Cardonal and off Punta Pescadero. These tuna were of 15 to 30 pounds.
The dorado caught this week were few and small. We got some dorado in various areas such as Isla Cerralvo and Punta Perico, and some roosterfish of 30 to 60 pounds around Punta Arena and the lighthouse. The area around San Isidro just to the south also produced some roosterfish for our pangas this week.
We have good supplies of sardina bait at El Cardonal, big ones that we are using for the tuna. This week we also had medium-sized squid in various areas around Isla Cerralvo.
The anglers fishing with us this week were happy with their tuna catches, and we hope more of them are planning to come to fish at La Paz.
