TEN YEARS OF FISHING WITH CAPT. PEDRO MAYORAL DAVIS
June 3, 2004, Chuck Campbell, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:
This makes to 10th consecutive year my wife, Judy, and I have fished Loreto, and the 10th year we have fished the same skipper, Pedro Mayoral Davis, A.K.A." The Pangadero without Peer" (011-52-113-135-0851).
Our US neighbors, Ray and Rhea Rader joined us. They had never been to Loreto and Rhea had never been fishing. We stayed at a house 50 yards from the boat ramp. The Raders are both converts to Loreto and plan on going back with us this November.
Rhea's 1st hook up was 3 (three) pinto bass. We were on the north side of Isla Coronado and you could hear her laughter for miles around. We brought back about 30 pounds of filleted pinto bass, snapper, whitefish and black sea bass!
We fished 1/2 day on the 24th, and full days the 25th, 28th and 29th. A full day with Pedro is from 7:30 AM until 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. He always has "uno mas" place he wants to drop a line. We have stayed out as late as 5:00 PM, until we thought we just couldn't crank that reel in one more time! Sometimes his wife can be persuaded to pack a lunch for all of us; luscious fried chicken, flavorful salsa, refried beans and tortillas.
We saw some yellow tail come in and heard of a ten pound Dorado being caught. The sails were still quite a way out. Water temp not quite up to norm yet. No mackerel but plenty of sardinas to net.
We found lots of squid on the shore of Coronado.
Most exciting not-fishing event was the loading of a pick up truck onto 2 pangas in the Marina. They lashed down some 2 by 12 boards on the pangas, picked up the truck with a mobile crane and after a few attempts, set it onto the boats. Quite a crowd gathered, cheering with each tentative drop and subsequent rocking of the two boats at the end of the ramp. More lashing and off they went, the pickup lashed to the 2 pangas, both ends hanging precariously of either side. It was a sight. The truck is to be used for sheep hunting on isla Carmen.
La Palapa still cooks our fish to order. The Playa Blanca and Tio Lupe are doing O.K. As always, we had a great trip.
