HUMBOLDT GIANT SQUID RETURN TO LOCAL WATERS 2 MILES OUT FROM MARINA
July 30, 2004, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing:
Yesterday was one of the off days. Most folks were lucky to just get their limits on dorado (two per day). The water was rough and the fishing was lean. A few nice fish did come in though but those were unusual. The typical Loreto sportfishing catch was about two dorado per boat with sizes from 12 to just under 20 pounds.
I am hearing of dorado hook ups followed by losing fish to break-offs. We do know that there are some larger dorado out there so be ready just in case.
I'm hearing about there still being lots of sailfish and marlin out there. they're more numerous than the dorado. Both conventional and fly anglers are getting them. Black marlin have been quite common this season, as usually we hardly ever see them. Sailfish have been thick, its been a good year for them.
Loreto Inshore & Structure Fishing: There have been enough Roosterfish, Cabrilla, Triggerfish, and Pargo in and over the reefs to keep everyone happy who's pursuing been them. Try the reefs at Isla Coronado, San Bruno, San Basilio, or all around Isla Carmen at Punta La Cholla, Punta Tintorerra, Punta Lobos and Perico, Punta Baja. However I expect with the bright moon in the nighttime sky, the bite will slow down for the next few days.
Bait: The mackerel sold out fairly early this morning. This is probably due to the fact that the moon is so bright in the night sky and that the winds throughout the night made catching it difficult.
The sardina have been spotty with most buying from the receiver or netting them off the shorelines to the south of the hotel Oasis in front of the villas de Loreto hotel.
The Humboldt giant squid are coming back and we're getting them easily again two miles off the marina in line with Punta La Cholla.
