ONE DORADO FISHING BUOY LEFT NORTH OF TOWN AT SAN BRUNO

Oct. 8-13, 2004, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto, Mexico Fishing:

We are still catching Dorado off San Bruno at the buoy that is still there. The few Loreto boats that have been going out and that have decided to go for Dorado have been congregating on the buoy.

Captain Francisco Munoz went there on Monday and with three anglers limited out on small Dorado. The dorado brought in were from 10 to 15 pounds and representative of what has been being caught over the last few weeks. They did, however lose a larger fish that I would estimate to be from 20 to 25 pounds. All were caught on live mackerel but Captain Francisco said that because these baits were so large, they lost a lot of fish. Sardinas would have been a better choice.

They spotted sailfish while they were out there but they were not targeting billfish. So we know that they're still out there. No report on size, but we commonly can get billfish through the month of October.

Larger Loreto yellowtail are off the cinquenta spot which is just north of the La Vaca seamount (off Punta Lobos, Isla Carmen). You'll need a non-windy day such as today to have a decent chance at them. Since the temperature of the water is changing rapidly at Loreto, the deep water currents are very strong--so use heavy weight (8 oz.) to get your bait down.

There is no shortage of Cabrilla or Pargo off the shores of San Bruno and San Basilio. Loreto folks fishing conventional can troll a Rapala type lure along the shoreline and expect to get some of these. Casting chrome lures such as Krocodiles is also effective as is fly fishing for them. In addition to the Cabrilla and Pargo, also expect to get some Triggerfish.

There are also Roosterfish and Jack Crevalle along the shorelines from the beaches just north of Loreto, to Punta Terra Firma (Doctor's Point), through San Bruno, and San Basilio. They have been elusive, being plentiful and fairly easily caught one day to being very elusive the next.

Loreto beaches are very quiet as far as fishing is concerned.

Boats were jigging for bait this morning as late as 8:00 a.m. There are mackerel off the lighthouse on Isla Coronado. There are also squid off the marina on the way out to Punta La Cholla (you can see these boats from town). There are also squid off the north side of Isla Coronado. The squid are large right now from 15 to over 40 pounds.

The sardina have been plentiful inside and around the outside walls of the Loreto marina. Prime time for the sardina is about quarter past seven in the morning, unless there's cloud cover.
