FISHING WITH SARDINA BAITS PRODUCES 6 SMALL DORADO
Oct. 30, 2004, Don Bear, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Trip Reports:
Ray & Harriet Harper of Lemon Grove and I fished yesterday (Friday) with Paulino Martinez, catching 6 dorado, of which 5 were small, plus 6 barrilete and 1 needlefish.
The "large" dorado was about 12 lbs. All the fish were caught on sardines Paulino netted at the Loreto marina, although we did troll live mackerel for much of the day. Loreto water temperature was 78 degrees; the sky was mostly sunny; the water was rough after about 9:00 due to a north wind that came up. We fished around Poncho's buoy at the San Bruno bajo, then trolled south toward Is. Coronado when the wind started blowing. It was a slow day.
John and Howard Mooers fished Tuesday and Friday with Alvaro Murillo, catching 1 leopard grouper on iron yesterday. Both days were very rough.
Only about 4 Loreto fishing pangas and 5 or 6 gringo boats went out yesterday. It is slow fishing here, with very few tourists around.
We were going to go out today (Saturday), but the continuation of the north wind through the night caused us to chicken out. Now (noon), of course, the sea is flat with sprinkles of rain now and then.
