FISHING WITH BLUEWATER TOURS AT SAN NICOLAS CAMP

Feb. 18, 2005, Richard Spinner, San Nicolas Camp, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:

Just got back from the Blue Water Tours fish camping trip at San Nicolas.

We went from Loreto on Saturday to San Nicolas Camp. It rained all day Friday but the weather cleared up for the camping trip. There were seven anglers. The facilities and food were great. I fished with Capitan Julio. The first fishing day the Yellowtail were really tight-lipped and none were caught. I trolled Pulpito and Ildefonso with Rapalas and threw Megabaits. There was a good bite on Cabrilla to 15 pounds and a few Pargo and a mixture of Ladyfish and Green Jacks.

The next day we jigged for bait at first light. Making mackerel bait was easy. We headed out to Ildefonso and most pangas got between 4 and 8 Yellowtail to 30 pounds with quite a few break-offs on the rocks. In the evening session I threw out a bait and got hammered by a big Horned Shark. It looked like a Hammerhead to me except much darker. It was hooked in the corner of the mouth and I was able to get it to the boat and it was released. We guessed it's weight at 80-100 pounds!

The next day we loaded up on Mackerel again. The Yellowtail were not interested in iron, period! The morning was slow but we spotted birds by Pulpito and it was classic action. Limitless big yellowtail to 35 pounds on live bait and trolled Rapalas. I caught and released 15 big boys before we broke camp and returned to Loreto under perfect weather. The captains were all saying that the next day, Thursday, would be epic but we had to get back to reality.

On a slightly somber note, the entire time we were there, there was a Guaymas shrimp trawler working the entire area south of Pulpito all night and the boat would moor south of Pulpito during the day. The name of the trawler was "Corazon VIII".
