SPORTFISHING CAPT. PEDRO MAYORAL DAVIS
March 5, 2005, Jeff Petersen, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report on Pedro Mayoral Davis:
Capt. Pedro Mayoral Davis is perhaps the busiest independent sportfishing captain in the Loreto vacation area. One might think his white-and-creme colored Ford Explorer, a gift from an old fishing client, that is parked daily in front of the Loreto marina is abandoned. Not so. The Ford will disappear at some point during the day, when Pedro brings his boat out of the water, only to return to its regular spot the following day.
I heard Pedro had seen a marlin recently. Believing it a good idea to seek comments from local captains, I asked Pedro to stop by my house and tell me about himself. These are his comments:
"I am Pedro Mayoral Davis. I have been fishing at Loreto since I was 14 years old. I am 44 now. I am one of 11 children. I wore my first pair of shoes when I was 15 years old.
"Thirty-four years ago, I was working polishing shoes for the Americans at Hotel La Pinta. At that time, the old airport was close to the La Pinta, and I worked washing airplanes for the Americans. It was when working for the Americans that I learned English. I never learned English from books or school. The biggest fish I have caught was 14 years ago, a 250-pound marlin.
"Right now, yellowtail or jurel, about 30 to 34 pounds, are being caught on the surface by fly-lining live baits, macarela, bigeye and platino. There is also cabrilla and pinto bass, about 2 kilos. Huachinango are at 200 feet, and baqueta are at 500 feet.
"Twenty days ago, we were commercial fishing at Punta Lobo, on Isla Coronado, for jurel and huachie, and a marlin grabbed the live bait at 200 feet deep. A week ago, a marlin jumped again at Punta Lagrima, also at Isla Coronado. Just feeling the water, and not using a thermometer, the water felt warmer, about 71 degrees. I think that this year marlin and dorado will come early. I also think that in four weeks the bait and dorado will be back."
