LORETO'S SPORTFISHING CAPT. ENRIQUE DAVIS ROMERO
April 2, 2005, Jeff Petersen, Interview with Loreto Sportfishing Captain Enrique Davis Romero:
Introducing one of the nicest guys on the planet, Enrique Davis Romero of Loreto. His telephone number from U.S.A. 011-52-613-135-0149. He shares the following:
"At age 12, I began helping my father net shark. When I was 18, I began working for Ed Tabor at the Flying Sportsman. I worked the Pirate 1, Pirate 2 and the Suzy 1. I skippered sportfishermen there for 12 years. I then began fishing my own boat, the Chuyita named for my daughter, as I continue to this day.
"Damaging impact to the environment today includes illegal use of cimbras. This long line with maybe 2,000 hooks when used deep, is legal with the proper permit. It is used with a buoy to hold the line high in the water and it catches many game fish. The practice is damaging yet continues in local waters.
"For my clients right now, I recommend fishing jurel and cabrilla beginning near bajo San Bruno, on to Puerto Almeja or further north to Pulpito. In 15 or 20 more days, we should come into our first dorado outside. The bulk of the season will be from May through August.
"When there is a lot of sargozo as we have this year, with our hands we will catch flying fish and use as bait. It is a favorite food of the dorado.
"One of the special events of my life was in 2001. I trailered my boat with two friends to Cabo San Lucas for the Bisbee tournament. We had possibly the smallest boat of 358 boats, fished marlin for three days but did not qualify.
"When I am not fishing, I enjoy horse races and chicken fights."
