GOOD BOTTOM FISHING ON ROCKS NEAR AIRPORT
April 23, 2005, Bill Currie, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:
I just got back from a week's fishing trip to Loreto, Baja California Sur.
Loreto fishing weather was in high 70's to low 80's. The fishing water was flat in the morning, but by 11 a.m., wind would come up and continue blowing all afternoon. Fishing was good from 5:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Bait was no problem. I made caballito right in front of the Loreto marina, or you could buy it.
The best place to fish was right off the coast by the Loreto airport, on four different rocks all holding quality fish. In three days of fishing at Loreto, I caught 7 yellowtail, all over 30 and 1 over 40 pounds, four pargo up to 8 pounds, and cabrilla of 15, 16, 17...biggest at 21 pounds. I fished in front of the Loreto airport control tower. Close to shore.
The water temperature was about 70 to 71 degrees, and the fish were hitting about 100 to 110 feet down.
On the drive down to Loreto, there was lots of gas, same pricing as here, and good roads.
In Loreto, I stayed at the Hotel Oasis, good service, food, and company
My sportfishing skipper at Loreto was Valente Davis on board the Katy. He is an excellent captain and will stay out all day to be sure to get you quality fish. He works very hard and speaks some English.
