DORADO FISHING A DISAPPOINTMENT
June 10, 2005, Pam Bolles, Baja Big Fish Company, Loreto Fishing Report:
Dorado fishing was disappointing for anglers who came to the Loreto vacation area this past week. The pelagics remain 45-55+ miles away NNE from Loreto. While there are some Dorado being caught we're still at less than the two Dorado per person limit. These Dorado are coming in on the large side in many cases.
Forty and 50-pound fish, but infrequently. Today Eulogio Davis Sanchez' boat caught a 55 pound bull dorado. Four Loreto super pangas, during three days of fishing for nine guys, took home three smoked sailfish and about ten, 20-pound class Dorado. Other boats decided to go straight for the inshore fishing, which is good right now, instead of taking a 120 mile boat ride for practically nothing.
There are good numbers of dorado out there however, and marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna and wahoo, but they don't feel much like eating. Right now water temperatures are from 76 to 81 degrees.
Lots of Loreto fishing boats have decided to just go for the Yellowtail. The yellowtail are coming off the bottom in several secret locations with live mackerel sent down with 8 oz. of lead. They are from 200-300 feet down and weighing in from 20 to 35+ pounds. Limits are not easily obtained, but are they really ever?
Roosterfish are still around Loreto but not as frequent as they had been about two weeks ago. I am getting reports of 30 pound class Roosterfish along the shoreline to our north.
The Cabrilla and Pargo action is stellar right now and why more folks don't take advantage of it is beyond me. Just along the shore lines and deep in the rocks you'll be able to easily obtain your limit on both species. There are all sizes too from 5 pounders to 18 pound fish.
Yesterday Loreto sportfishing captain Francisco Munoz got into amberjack just to the NE of Isla Monserrat. there were lots of them but he was there with fly rods exclusively. These fish wouldn't take any flies offered but they were happy crashing the sardinas that were tossed out at them.
Bait has available to buy every day at Loreto, but catching it has been off and on. The sardinas are right inside the Loreto marina and are available to buy from a netter.
