FISHING WITH CAPT. JOSE TORRES OF JUNCALITO
June 13, 2005, Tony Cherbak, Loreto, Mexico Fishing Report:
We fished one day with Jose Torres from Juncalito, but it was my observations and discussion with Jose that were most telling. I have known Jose for 33 years and fished with him for the first time back in 1972. Last week, we fished the reefs off Monserato Island and down to outside Agua Verde for a total of 3 cabrilla and 1 pinto bass.
The water was green and cold. Jose said that, other than the migratory species, (dorado, yellowtail), virtually all the inshore species were nonexistent and had been for some time. I found this to be a sad situation given how good this area was in earlier years. I think the commercial pressure and lack of any conservation programs have really hit the area hard.
In town, some of the boats were getting a few dorado, marlin and sailfish but were going out 50 miles to do so. On one day, 20 boats went out for a total of 1 dorado.
